Increasing estate security with spike barriers

1 July 2020 Access Control & Identity Management

When combined with an automated traffic boom, tyre spike barriers provide residential estates with safe, fail-proof access control. Turnstar’s Velocity Raptor automatic tyre spike industrial vehicle barriers are designed for use in severe operating conditions, making them the perfect choice for estate entrance and exit points.

Building on the success of its existing range of traffic barriers, Turnstar has included an integrated optic LED light strip in the Velocity Raptor’s boom for maximum visibility, safety and aesthetics. “Our engineers have placed a focus on both enhanced security and user safety with the Velocity Raptor. The resultant three-stage interlinked opening and closing procedure is designed to ensure that no mishaps occur when a vehicle drives underneath the barrier arm,” says Craig Sacks, managing director of Turnstar.

The procedure guarantees safe passage of vehicles during:

• Opening – the spikes are lowered; the barrier arm is raised; the optic LED barrier arm changes to green.

• Closing – the optic LED barrier arm changes to red; the barrier arm is lowered; the spikes are raised.

The Velocity Raptor is suitable for high-volume applications and reduces any bottlenecks with its high-speed operation capabilities. A number of adjustable raise and lower speed settings provide seamless, precise speed control, with dynamic braking and slow stop.

The barrier is run from the 4,5 A power supply and also has a built-in battery backup (7Ah) with battery protection. It can also operate with a solar-powered system, thereby ensuring continuous operation in spite of power supply limitations. The effortless mechanical override allows for manual release of the sturdy octagonal barrier arm and double-sided spike, allowing traffic to pass without interruption. An articulated arm kit is fitted below the barrier arm to provide maximum height clearance when installed below a low ceiling or roof.

The Velocity Raptor is available in powder coated mild steel and 3Cr12 stainless steel, brushed 304 and 316 grade stainless steel. The cabinet can be provided in the full RAL colour range to complement the surrounding environmental aesthetics, and a vinyl wrapped finish can be customised in the customer’s own branding preference.
