Access & Identity Management Handbook 2005 Access Control & Identity Management

Project scope

One GSC Proxnet Controller required as it was a single building; 25 GSC readers for use both indoors and outdoors; and one DSC Power864 control panel to integrate the access control system with the alarm system.

The history

The United Cricket Board of South Africa based in Atholl, Johannesburg, was experiencing ongoing problems with its access control system. The system was continually going offline and access doors were periodically failing to operate.

ADT Security identified the source of the problem as incorrect design and wiring of the access control and alarm system by the original installation company.

The goal

The aim of the project was to accurately redesign and expand the access control system as an online system, and to correct the wiring.

The solution

ADT Security tackled the problem by completely redesigning and rewiring the system. The Proxnet Controller and PCs connected to the system were also placed in secure locations.

Explains Linda Delpêche, executive security consultant for ADT, "We realised that the older computers in use at the time needed to be replaced as they were unable to cope with the latest technology and software. On behalf of the Cricket Board we bought and installed new software in upgraded computers."

The benefits

An effective access control and alarm system now enables the Cricket Board to successfully manage their security.

"The alarm system chosen, DSC Power864, offers great flexibility in terms of future expansion. The modular design allows for the addition of different technology modules to the same control panel."

The result

"With the correct system design and installation, we now have a fully functional system," Delpêche explains.

"When designing any kind of security system - access control, alarm, CCTV - it is vital that all aspects of the installation be taken into account; wiring, power supply, location of control panels, coverage of detection devices etc.

"The client also needs to be fully briefed on the usage, features and benefits of the system to enable 100% effective management of their system.

"If a security system is not designed in line with the client's specific needs and insurance requirements, it will not function effectively even if top-of-the-range equipment is installed. This is what we have done for the Cricket Board."
