Biometric security now affordable

November 2011 Access Control & Identity Management

Free biometric management software now available.

Security systems based on biometrics are commonplace across SA in environments ranging from mines and factories to offices and residential complexes. The reason for such widespread use is straightforward – the technology pays for itself by reducing the losses caused by unauthorised access. By replacing traditional cards and PINs with fingerprint identification, companies are achieving far greater control of who can access their premises.

Until recently, the use of such advanced systems has been mainly limited to big organisations with matching budgets. The launch of Ideco ES² means that is about to change, giving smaller companies access to all the advantages of fingerprint-based security.

Free software

Ideco ES² is a free software package that allows you to control access from up to six Morpho fingerprint scanners installed at separate locations across your premises. Marius Coetzee, CEO of Ideco says, “As SA’s largest distributor of biometric technology, we know that many companies either cannot afford or do not need the advanced functionalities of the big access control and time management solutions that are deployed by larger organisations.

“Although they are attracted to the benefits of fingerprint-based security, they cannot justify the software expense of a highly sophisticated access system.”

With Ideco ES², you only pay for the Morpho fingerprint hardware, its associated accessories and installation. The free software enables you to enrol staff on the system and to manage and record who goes where and when.

“It is a very easy system to use, requiring nothing more than basic computer literacy,” says Coetzee. He explains that Ideco ES² was developed to deliver a simple user interface and to produce straightforward time-based reporting on access and attendance.

In comparison to a full-blown workforce management solution, Coetzee says Ideco ES² is a bit like an entry-level cellphone: “It performs the basics really well, but does not come with all the advanced functions – or price-tag – of a top-end smartphone.”

Creating broader access

Coetzee sees Ideco ES² as an opportunity for many more companies to access the advantages of biometrics. Although these benefits are applicable to all types of organisations, examples of potential biometric users might range from professional services companies such as lawyers, consultants and accountants, through to retailers, manufacturers, residential complexes and recreational facilities like gyms and golf clubs.

“The requirements for a fingerprint access solution will vary from business to business,” says Coetzee. “For example, a professional services firm might want stricter access control for certain offices, whereas a restaurant or manufacturer may be more concerned with managing attendance and hours worked.

“Biometric technology is fast, accurate and convenient. With a proven track record locally for cutting losses, it has established itself as being far more effective than conventional access cards or PINs.”
