Remote surveillance over 3G

November 2009 Surveillance

With the lack of fixed line infrastructure in many countries and even in rural areas of South Africa, cellular communication is the logical alternative. In the surveillance field, more organisations have been migrating towards low bit-rate video surveillance products that have turned remote and centralised video surveillance across the corporate wide area network (WAN) into an affordable and practical reality by using 3G or even WiMAX for mobile data communication.

The president of Brigit, Deon van Zyl, believes the effective mobile video CCTV monitoring solutions are the way of the future for distributed surveillance solutions as they are flexible enough to allow users to access remote CCTV video monitoring over cellphone (GPRS or 3G), ADSL, 802.11, or any other IP-based WAN link. Clients can accurately verify images and data immediately, ensuring that they do not waste time responding to false alarms – which account for over 90% of alerts raised in control rooms.

Brigit supplied solutions such as these into Zambia to Tau Risk Consultants, a specialist in security solutions and expects to see 600 remote sites deployed by using Brigit/WiBorne’s W3G-200U Wireless/3G USB router which offers AlwaysOn for seamless and uninterrupted security monitoring.

Benefits associated with Brigit’s remote monitoring include alarm verification, improved productivity, improved security management as well as improved management of armed response services. By allowing management to access remote sites when alarms are raised, CCTV becomes a proactive response tool instead of a post event investigative solution.
