Precision fibre-optics

July 2009 Products & Solutions

Letlhaka Technologies, a Pretoria-based fibre-optic technology company is launching its new Precision range of fibre-optic end equipment for the security and data-communications industries. The company says the new range of fibre-optic end equipment will set a new industry standard for affordable digital video and data transmission equipment.

The Precision range offers end equipment to transmit video, audio, data, contact closure, telecommunication and Ethernet signals over fibre-optic cable. Using the latest FPGA and PLD silicon in its designs enables products across the range to send signals in digital format but at such reduced cost that it makes existing low cost analog, FM or DWDM-based designs seem obsolete.

“We invested a lot of time and energy in developing and securing production facilities for a product range that delivers high performance with affordability in mind for the South African market,” says Letlhaka MD, Corné van der Merwe. “When you take into account the affordability of our new single-mode digital video transmission kit and combine it with our range of Rapier easy-breakout fibre cable you soon realise that the combination offers a solution that revolutionises the cost and deployment speed of single-mode video over fibre networks.”

Available in single-channel as well as two-, four-, eight- and 16-channel multiplexer versions, Precision digital video transmission sets will transport uncompressed video signals at full D1 resolution with zero latency. This makes it ideal for use in low light and PTZ applications where problems with MPEG encoding would have introduced latency and macro blocking. These digital video to fibre converters are available as standalone units or 19-inch rack-mount cards for high density applications. The precision range also includes Ethernet media converters up to 1 Gbps, as well as serial data modems and protocol converters for E1 or V.35 signals.

“The entire product range is field-hardened up to 75°C to withstand high summer temperatures when mounting the equipment outdoors,” says Letlhaka technical director, Riaan Janse van Rensburg. The Precision range comes with a standard one year warranty, an optional warranty extension plan and local support.

The product went on sale at the beginning of June with the official launch to be held at the Letlhaka offices in Pretoria on Tuesday, 14 July.
