Tips for protecting your home

May 2007 Residential Estate (Industry)

Many families spend thousands of rands on furniture and then settle for a simple alarm system that cannot be switched on while they are in their homes.

It does not cost a fortune to protect your family and home. The first step is to make sure you have a `safe zone' in your home for you and your family. This could be a bedroom section that is securely barred and closed off with proper doors. You need to have an area in your home that intruders cannot get into while you wait for the police or your armed response company to arrive.

The next step is to have a proper alarm installed.

What is a proper alarm? Ideally, it is a system designed to alarm perimeter doors and windows and still allow you to move around inside your home while the alarm is on. The standard infrared detector alarm system is the solution to alarm your home when you are away, not while you are home.

The next step is to install a CCTV system. You need to be able to see the other side of your home at night. No one wants to make new friends at 3 a.m. when the alarm is set off or you hear a noise. Of course you will make sure that you have cameras facing the driveway and street so you do not walk or drive into your worst nightmare when you leave your home.

As mentioned before you are also most vulnerable when returning home. If someone is home, a quick call to them to check the street is clear is all that is required.
