These products and systems are operationally deployed on a wide variety of platforms and are battle proven. This experience has provided GST with unique and innovative capabilities to provide solutions tailored to operational requirements. GST prides itself on a willingness to transfer knowledge and technology to selected customers in order to steer them towards self-reliance.

In a given security scenario there is always a trade-off between the cost of the security system and the value or sensitivity of the property to be protected.

GST Perimeter Security Systems address various areas of perimeter security protection by providing a suite of affordable solutions to fit the requirements of the client. The different types of sensors deployed to detect intrusions are:

p Security fence electrifiers used to energise an electrified fence.

p Passive pressure sensitive sensors buried underground.

p Passive wire protection fence systems.

p Infrared beam barriers.

p CCTV camera system for monitoring and surveillance.

p Access control systems, typically swipe cards etc.

Electrified fence systems

An electrified security fence system provides a cost-effective solution for detecting intrusions into a secured area. With the early detection of intruders, secondary measures can be put into action to identify and apprehend intruders.

The electrified fence system ensures a low and slow penetration with three operational electrification modes, namely alarm mode, non-lethal mode, lethal mode. However, use of lethal mode requires government approval and authorisation. The multiple detection facilities ensure high accuracy on intrusion points with a centrally computerised command and control centre, for remote control.

A radio data link or fibre-optic link can be used for remote communication. The high-tech, advanced electronically based system has database logging and is highly reliable with low maintenance requirements. Hardware and software can be customised to the client's requirement and is ISO 9001 certified.

The system is of a turn-key nature with construction and installation executed professionally to the customers satisfaction. All personnel are highly trained and skilled.

System application

The system can be employed in a number of various applications, and include, but are not limited to:

p International border fence security systems.

p Game reserve/game farm perimeter fencing.

p High security area fences, eg sensitive installations, airports, power stations, prisons, etc.

p Securing of homesteads, farmyards, and security villages.

p Homes, high-end residential areas.

p Industrial sites, radio antennas, TV masts and towers.

GPS pressure sensor system

GPS is a buried line differential pressure system suitable for the discreet perimeter protection of commercial, domestic, industrial, military or other high-risk areas. Due to its unique concept GPS can be used in all types of applications and is completely invisible.

GPS is a passive system and it is therefore impossible to ascertain the precise location even by using the most sophisticated detection and measuring equipment. GPS provides a high probability of detection combined with an exceptionally low nuisance alarm rate.

Due to the fact that the entire design assembly is buried, it is protected from the effects of climatic deterioration or atmospheric interference and requires a minimum of maintenance.

GPS uses 2 or 4 specially formulated underground sensing tubes, which are normally, buried 25-30 cm deep and between 1-1,5 m apart. Once filled with liquid and pressurised, the tubes will detect and measure the differential change in pressure between them caused by an intruder's approach. This differential pressure change is converted to an electrical signal by the underground sensor. The resultant signal is subjected to complex analysis by the sensor to determine whether it matches particular signal patterns. When all the criteria are met, the signal is passed to a central control unit that will interface into most alarm control and monitoring systems.

GPS has been extensively tested and proven in its capability to detect intruders walking, running, jumping, rolling, attempting to bridge the system with planks or trying to dig underneath the sensor tubes. Each sensor will have two zones of protection up to a maximum of 100 m in length each. Each zone will have two or, in high security applications, four tubes joined at one end to the compensating valve and at the other end to the sensor. By linking multiples of this basic configuration, any length of perimeters can be protected.

The sensors, up to a maximum of 16, are connected to a common control unit via a common 3-core cable. When more than 16 sensors are required, multiple control units are used.

DPS dual technology systems

The latest buried intruder detection system uses a combination of different technologies to produce a very stable, high security detection system. In addition to this unique combination of technologies the system also takes advantage of significant increases in signal processing power available from state of the art digital signal processing (DSP) components. The two technologies are the GPS system (mentioned above) and the RF cable system.

RF cable system

This uses two specially constructed coaxial cables, buried around the perimeter in a similar fashion to the pressure tubes mentioned above. A high frequency radio signal is transmitted along one cable and, due to the construction of the cable, gradually 'leaks' out of the cable, creating a RF field around the cable.

The second cable acts as a receiver for this field and carries the received signal back to the signal processor for analysis. The presence of an intruder in the field will create a disturbance in the received signal that can be analysed for various types of attack.

Both of these technologies have been used individually for a number of years and are subject to certain limitations of use due to different responses to certain environmental effects. By combining the two technologies it is possible to create a system that will give a high level of confidence that alarms are genuine in even the most difficult conditions while still maintaining the advantages of covert, buried detection systems.

CPS microphonic cable system

The CPS is a passive, perimeter intruder detection system, suitable for both internal and external applications. It is normally installed on existing, external fences such as chain link and welded mesh. It can also be used on top of, or in the structure of walls (wood, brick, stone, etc.) It is designed to detect all the typical intrusion attempts for cutting the fence, pulling or lifting the fence or climbing over and, in the case of internal applications, penetration of the wall. The system is used as the primary means of detection in applications of medium to high risk. When used with a secondary system (such as a CCTV surveillance equipment) it can be used for highest risk applications.

The operation of the CPS system is based on detecting all of the typical mechanical disturbances produced during an attempted intrusion, with a microphonic cable. These disturbances produce small deformations in the microphonic cable that generate an electric signal by the piezo-electric effect. The control unit analyses the electrical signal present on the cable continuously and when this signal passes, a pre-set signal level can generate an alarm indication.

WPS intelligent cable system

The WPS fence is the product of a design concept developed following a detailed study of today's requirements for perimeter protection fence systems. The system has a high probability of detection coupled with a very low nuisance alarm rate. Tampering with the system is made virtually impossible whilst still maintaining simplicity of both parts used and installation technique.

The specially designed cable displays a particular electrical characteristic that changes in a manner directly proportional to the physical deformation of the cable. The cable is a steel multi-strand single core conductor insulated by a particular dielectric material. This is then screened by braided copper and sleeved.

The cable strength allows it to be mounted taught on the fence, enhancing its signal characteristics. Cutting or altering its quiescent physical state, typically by displacing it in an attempt to enter the protected area, will generate a proportional electrical signal. The signal is then filtered and analysed by a powerful microprocessor unit that compares it to a number of pre-set parameters. These include amplitude, timing, existing background noise and other known interference signatures. Various levels of alarm, tamper and fault signals can be set up to suit a wide variety of applications.

A typical WPS fence is installed a few centimetres away from the inside face of an existing fence or wall. The cable is stretched between special tensioning and support posts that are normally fixed to the existing structure. If required, these posts can be free standing. Another very effective system application is on top of a wall, ceiling or floor to provide a highly secure and extremely stable form of protection.

IPS infrared sensor system

These infrared beam barriers have been designed to be installed in external applications under the most demanding climatic conditions. The extruded aluminium cases offer maximum mechanical strength and the sealing process makes them totally waterproof.

The transmitting unit sends invisible infra red pulses to a receiver unit along with a synchronising signal. The receiver will only analyse the infrared signal when the synchroniser signal is received. The receiver will not recognise continuos light (either visible or infrared) thus making it practically immune to direct sunlight or deliberate interference. The alarm signal is available as a voltage-free relay contact, normally closed. The unit is fully tamper proof and a potentiometer adjustment is also available to set the alarm response to crossing speeds between 25 and 300 ms.

CCTV camera surveillance systems

Any of the above-mentioned detection systems can also be combined with or linked to a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera system for on-line surveillance of the effected area. A CCTV camera system can also be deployed on its own as a security system.

A wide variety of cameras and lenses are available to suit individual requirements. For example: a monochrome (black and white) camera can be fitted with a fixed lens to monitor a door: or a full colour camera can be fitted with a zoom lens and the assembly attached onto a motorised pan and tilt platform to scan different areas.

Since CCTV camera systems can be deployed in high-risk areas, such as chemical plants, explosives depots etc, provision is also made for protective housings for the cameras and lenses. A wide variety of housings such as waterproof or bullet-proof housings are available.

Current users

There are a number of institutions that are currently using these major security systems both locally and internationally. Currently, the biggest security system worldwide was constructed by GST in a Middle Eastern country. In South Africa itself, the South African National Defence Force has used various systems in diverse applications ranging from border fences around the northern and eastern borders and access control systems within units.

In the commercial market, various systems have been used for protecting overseas bird farms, the fence system for De Beers Venetia mine, Leopard Creek Private Game Park, and the complete security fence system for Mooikloof Estates in Pretoria.

All in all GST has the electrified fence and perimeter security system for your security needs whether it be commercial, industrial or private.
