Securing the island of Eden

Access & Identity Management Handbook 2014 Access Control & Identity Management

Eden Island is a private residential marina development located just off the coast of Mahe, in the Seychelles. This manmade island consists of luxury apartments, maisons and villas. Residents are entitled to their own private mooring thanks to the fully established international marina which is capable of handling yachts of up to 100 metres in length.

Until recently, access to the estate was unrestricted and EIDC was appointed by the VMA to install, amongst other things, the access control solution for the Eden Island Residential Estate. They were appointed at the beginning stages of construction and were therefore involved with the project from the ground up. The client wanted a high quality product that needed to be aesthetically pleasing as well as simple to install.

A few solutions were considered but in the end EIDC contacted Powell Tronics, the official South African supplier for Impro Technologies access control and Morpho biometrics, which went about designing a bill of quantities for the unique requirement.

The only form of transport on the island is by EPV (Electronic Powered Vehicle) and for this reason a multilevel car park to store larger vehicles was built at the entrance of the island. Access control has now been installed at the car park as well as three other locations to control pedestrian and EPV access.

The access control solution will soon be upgraded to include time & attendance that will integrate to the existing payroll system. Future upgrades to the system include a recently completed retail centre as well as a 5-star luxury hotel that is currently under construction.

The result is improved and reliable access control, real-time transactions that are visible in the control room, as well as the benefits of a biometric solution. There will soon be no need for costly proximity tags as there is no longer the possibility of buddy-clocking for employees, and T&A, tags cannot be lost or left at home.

Powell Tronics assisted with designing the access control solution as well as preprogramming all the equipment before it was shipped to the Seychelles. A database import of all existing staff, contractors and residents from the existing system was also done to speed up the enrolment process.
