Enthralled, educated and entertained

Securex South Africa 2019 has released details around some of the free-to-attend seminars that will be hosted throughout the show, taking place from 14 to 16 May this year at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.

“As Securex is being co-located with the A-OSH EXPO 2019 and Facilities Management Expo 2019 shows, visitors will have access to five different streams of content, at no charge,” says Sven Smit, portfolio director at Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery. “This will include the popular Securex seminar theatre, dedicated cybersecurity content running within the new 4Sight Cybersecurity Pavilion, the PASMA Working at Height Theatre and Saiosh seminar theatre (powered by Saiosh and Sapema) situated in the A-OSH hall, and a focused facilities management stream within the Facilities Management Expo area.”

Sessions within the seminar theatres will be delivered by industry thought leaders providing insight into current (and anticipated) market trends and developments, along with practical advice and guidance to visitors operating across the value supply chain.

“Within the Securex seminar theatre, a good example of this is the topic Comprehending the Recent Crime Trends in SA – 2019 Insights, which will be delivered by Gareth Newham, head of the Crime and Justice Programme Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria. Newham will be delving into recent crime trends in South Africa, with particular focus being given to the factors driving the notable increases in murder and armed robbery over the past few years.”

Smit goes on to say that the Fire Protection Association of South Africa (FPASA) will be hosting two seminar topics, bringing focus to fire safety in the workplace. The organisation will be talking about:

1. Decreasing fire risks by cultivating a culture of wise choices – this talk will bring focus to the easily neglected topic of fire safety at work, promoting a better understanding of what an effective fire risk management process looks like, and how it can be efficiently implemented.

2. Proactive fire safety – FPASA will use this slot to bring awareness to the essential requirements when it comes to proactively meeting general health and safety compliance metrics.

“Visitors will also be invited to attend sessions around transport and logistics security, where our speaker will deliver the Transport and Logistics Security Report: Protecting Supply Chains & Associated Threats to Business and the Economy paper, discussing the most efficient mechanisms this industry is able to utilise to promote security across the logistics and transport value chains,” explains Smit.

It doesn’t end here, he adds, with additional relevant industry topics to be covered, including:

• PoPI compliance and the role of biometrics. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation became fully enforceable on 25 May 2018. The local equivalent, PoPI (Protection of Personal Information) is still in limbo. How will those using biometrics in the security industry comply when PoPI becomes a reality?

• Are you 2030 ready? Children in Grade R today will matriculate in 2030 and will quickly enter a world that is very different to the one we’re living in today. This session will discuss the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the rise of universal broadband access, artificial intelligence and robotics – all within the context of whether our children are going to be prepared for it.

“It almost goes without saying that visitors to Securex 2019 will be kept busy, entertained and educated,” says Smit.
