Secure student accommodation

February 2018 Education (Industry), Access Control & Identity Management

As conventional university/college student accommodation has become oversubscribed, the demand for alternative private student accommodation has increased in the past few years. CampusKey provides all-inclusive accommodation for over 3 750 students in Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch, Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom, Pretoria and Cape Town.

System integrator Fast Fire & Security National, one of CampusKey’s service providers, provides a variety of security and fire services that include access control, at six of CampusKey’s campuses.

According to Carlo Le Brun of Fast Fire, the company has been involved in each of the projects from the planning stages and has developed solutions specific to the requirements of each campus, with a focus on enhanced security for the students and their assets.

A longstanding relationship with Powell Tronics assisted Fast Fire in finding an access control technology to cater for egress and ingress at the vehicle entrance/exit, main door, and all internal doors leading from lift foyers to the floors. Approximately 121 biometric readers have been installed on approximately 61 doors per site.

Powell Tronics supplied Impro cluster controllers and Sigma Morpho biometric readers. “We have a number of CampusKey sites running these access control solutions, including those in Port Elizabeth, Laranja (Stellenbosch) and Mowbray. We are currently completing other locations in Port Elizabeth, Hatfield and Bloemfontein, all using the same solution,” says Le Brun.

“CampusKey is very satisfied with the high quality of the work performed and our primary goals of ensuring the enhanced security of the students and their belongings have been met. The secret, we believe, is to align oneself with a technology provider that has a proven track record in supplying solutions in the specific sector under consideration.”
