Keeping the crowds in check

March 2017 Access Control & Identity Management, Entertainment and Hospitality (Industry), Products & Solutions

The 29th Southeast Asian Games, commonly known as Kuala Lumpur 2017, is a regional multi-sport event that will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 19 to 31 August 2017, with 405 events in 38 sports to be featured in the games.

If ticket numbers at the 2015 event are emulated, then over three quarters of a million people can be expected to throng the main stadium in Bukit Jalil. Controlling the access of such a vast number of people over the 12-day period is an immense task that requires careful planning and design, coupled with proven and reliable physical access control equipment.

An ISO 9001:2015 accredited physical access control solutions manufacturer, Turnstar has a proven track record in providing turnstiles to the stadium market. According to the company’s CEO, Craig Sacks, the company’s reputation was the primary reason for a Malaysian turnstile supplier to sub-contract Turnstar to provide its Rotalok turnstile mechanisms for the stadium contract.

The Rotalok rotation locking mechanism and electronic control panel forms the heart of Turnstar’s turnstile design. With a well-established record for reliability, these mechanisms incorporate an Anti-Trap safety system and suspended rotor technology.

The Rotalok design has been tried, tested and refined over a period of more than 20 years and is used in more than 40 000 turnstiles worldwide. An integral part of Africa’s best-selling turnstile – the Turnstar Triumph – the Rotalok ultra heavy-duty electromechanical rotation locking is engineered to eliminate stress on the base bearing, and increases reliability.

The Rotalok mechanism has a self-centring rotation system, whereby the rotor returns to its starting position after every rotation of the turnstile arms. Designed by professional engineers, the bi-directional operation of the mechanism affords maximum flexibility for stadium customers. Adding extra personal safety and wellbeing to the equation, the Anti-trap safety system ensures that no mid-rotation locking or trapping occurs in the event of a power failure.

Turnstar’s design and manufacturing capabilities and capacities are backed by exemplary pre- and after-market technical advice and support to ensure that each installation is completed to the client’s satisfaction.
