Tackling fraud with biometrics

February 2016 Access Control & Identity Management, Asset Management

Widely used in the social insurance arena, the ZK4500 optical fingerprint sensor from ZKTeco is finding increasing popularity within general security, time and attendance, fingerprint encryption and embedded system applications.

Hendrik Combrinck, MD of ZKTeco South Africa, explains that the product is used to identify a person’s identity before digital transactions can be made. These transactions include leave request approvals, approval of overtime, PC/laptop logins and restaurant order requests.

The device captures a fingerprint image and uploads this to a PC using a USB interface, supporting Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7/8 (32/64 bit)/10. Using a patented fingerprint sensor and algorithm, the device is able to verify a previously enrolled person and log them in as the user approving the transaction.

The device is designed for ease of use and maintenance free operation. Housed in high-quality industrial class ABS plastic, with a scratchproof texture surface treatment, the ZK4500 is geared around durability and reliability.

Combrinck points out that the device has been configured to allow software developers to integrate the hardware into their own system. A service is created on the user’s computer that reads the user’s fingerprint and verifies this against a database of users to verify the identity of the person using the computer.

The hardware has been integrated into the latest Pastel Evolution software to confirm users who log into Pastel as the program opens.

The main benefit of the ZK4500 is its ability to drastically reduce unauthorised digital transactions by making each user responsible for authorising their own transactions.

Weighing a mere 240 grams and measuring a compact 53 x 80 x 66 mm, the ZK4500 is an unobtrusive yet highly effective tool in the fight against fraud.
