Bright future for security lights

September 2015 Surveillance

Spying an opportunity in the local market for security lighting, Green Illumination Systems South Africa (GIS-SA) has taken the initiative of venturing into local manufacturing. The resulting products straddle the mid-range of the cost spectrum, and complement an established pipeline of products the company has been importing since its founding in 2012.

GIS-SA’s Roston Sadie explains the reasoning behind the move: “So many security products are imported these days, especially in the lighting game. We have been part of this process until recently. We have found that the imitation or cheap end of the market is filled with inferior products. Nevertheless the security installers are forced to use these inferior products as budget constraints are the order of the day.

“On the other end of the scale are the high-end imported goods. These products are incredibly expensive and don’t necessarily offer great value for money in terms of ROI. However, top-tier customers are forced to pay a price for quality and to avoid the really cheap and nasty products.”

The company has firsthand experience in top-tier projects, having been involved in the likes of Steyn City, Waterfall City and the South African Reserve Bank. While acknowledging that high-end products are often non-negotiable with this breed of customer, Sadie points out that the weakening of the Rand is making them unaffordable even to niche clientele who demand such quality.

Given this context, GIS-SA set about establishing manufacturing partnerships for its own range of home-grown LED security lights. Everything from the electronics to the housings are procured and produced locally – even waste products are recycled via community projects.

Sadie believes the main benefits of the new venture boil down to quality, agility and cost. “Our locally made products are hand crafted and are of the highest quality,” he states. “We can produce in much shorter times and there is no need to ship from far away which only adds delays and cost. We are saving customers time and money. Not only that but we can do completely custom designs on the fly.”

The type of customisation offered gives customers choice over light colour, wattage, angle of light coverage to suit the application, and coating to match the environment. This versatility makes the lights applicable to a wide array of applications, just a few of which are infrared CCTV illuminators, security floodlights and shopping centre lighting.

Enlighten your life

Made under its Enlighten brand, one of GIS-SA’s locally produced offerings is an IR illuminator for security and CCTV lighting. The system’s base unit incorporates the electronics and light engine for emitting high levels of IR or white light. This universal base can fit into a selection of housings, providing flexibility in terms of colour, brackets, lighting, angles and input voltage.
