Enabling an always-on business

1 November 2014 Security Services & Risk Management

Veeam Software, a provider of solutions that deliver availability for the modern data centre, is launching Veeam Availability Suite v8. This new solution category that does what legacy data protection and backup systems could never do: enable the always-on business

The business landscape has changed dramatically in the last several years and the business cycle is no longer five days a week, eight hours a day. As globalisation sees companies trade across different time zones, logistics and supply chain automation require permanent access to operational systems, people demand access to data and applications from any place, any device and any time. With the rise of the Internet of Things, there is now no tolerance for downtime or outages.

These demands for non-stop service delivery bring about an inevitable change in the business landscape. Companies that don’t become an always-on business will sooner or later not be in business anymore. But there is currently a gap between always-on business solutions and the capabilities of backup solutions, characterised by issues such as data loss, long recovery times, unreliable data protection, and a lack of visibility that leads to unpredicted issues and downtime.

Achieving non-stop availability of applications and data has traditionally required a significant investment in fully redundant systems with instant failover, ensuring recovery within seconds. These kinds of massive investments could only be justified for a few applications, so the vast majority of applications are served with legacy backup solutions that offer recovery time and point objectives (RTPOs) of several hours or days, failing to meet the needs of the always-on business.

Veeam Availability Suite v8 bridges this availability gap with RTPOs of less than 15 minutes for all applications and data, enabling the always-on business. Using modern virtualisation, storage and cloud technologies, and now integrating with the leading storage solutions from providers like EMC, HP and NetApp, Veeam Availability Suite provides critical enabling technology for the modern data centre. This provides a new level of availability and also helps extract a significant additional benefit from new and existing investments into the modern data centre.

Veeam Cloud Connect, part of the new Veeam Availability Suite v8, gives customers a fully integrated, secure and efficient means to move backups to an offsite backup repository managed by the service provider of their choice, avoiding the upfront capital investment of their own offsite infrastructure. Availability Suite will be available in Q4, 2014. Pricing is based per CPU socket, includes the first year of maintenance and support, and starts (in South Africa) at $1380 for Standard Edition, $1863 for Enterprise and $2626 for Enterprise Plus Edition.
