Thermals and analytics secure perimeter

Just 10 minutes north of the Sandton CBD lies the breath-taking 640 ha secure, family-oriented Waterfall Country Estate. Facilities in this premier residential estate include 37 kilometres of walking and biking trails that meander through 300 ha of pristine green belt along the riverside, a majestic 5 ha lake, a 5000 m² clubhouse with full gym, squash courts, studios, climbing wall, restaurant, indoor kids play area and even a private school. Reddam House Waterfall is located inside the estate.

Century Property Developments continues to deliver a superior product to residents and investors alike with its uniquely South African architecture, indigenous landscaping, green approach, and state-of-the-art security. Proven high returns on investment and family centred lifestyle are also at the core of Waterfall’s well-earned status.

Security at Waterfall, envisaged to be superior to any other residential estate in South Africa, has taken another giant leap forward by the recent completion of the thermal and video analytics perimeter detection system. Nick Crow of Century Property Developments says the intention is to commission high specification security systems such as this across all Century estates within the coming months.

“The reason for this is that home buyers and residents not only deserve it, but they demand it. One thing that sets our developments apart from others is the high level of security we offer. A recent survey shows that 86% of our purchasers come to Waterfall and our other secure estates first and foremost because of security, and next because of lifestyle. In truth, you can’t have one without the other in this country. Nobody wants to live in a prison to keep safe, but if you don’t have the very best security, you are a target. Our mission is to keep our residents secure, which is something we’re proud to say we’re achieving thanks to state-of-the-art security installations like this.”

Sixty-eight FLIR thermal cameras and 30 colour / monochrome CCD cameras together with video analytics were installed on the 14 km perimeter by local integrators 4C Technology. 4C Technology is a security technology integration company operating in a number of sectors from industrial and commercial developments to mining, government departments and residential lifestyle estates.

The business established its market credentials with the gold mining sector in its early years. Paul Frewen, MD of 4C Technologies, elaborates, “Together with Century we took great care in selecting the products that would best suit the requirement, especially with the Jukskei River running through the estate and with eight entrance gatehouses providing entrance into the estate for residents, service providers and contractors. We looked at various options and the FLIR solution provided us with the most effective means to detect possible intrusions and enable the control room operators to make correct and speedy decisions to prevent any breach of security.”

Thermal cameras and video analytics

Thermal cameras complement and complete a security camera network by giving the end user the power to see threats invisible to the naked eye, turning night into day. Thermal security cameras make images from the heat energy that is around us all the time, not from reflected visible light, giving you 24/7 imaging capability without lights or illuminators. Thermal energy penetrates atmospheric obscurants better and farther than visible light, allowing you to see what’s out there through haze, smoke, dust and even light fog. Day and night, through good weather and bad, close up and far away. The thermal cameras are integrated with video analytics that use mathematical algorithms linked to computer vision technology. These algorithms allow video cameras to be programmed to detect and extract only useful information to provide hugely more accurate and effective video and alarms back to the control rooms.

SA distributors of the FLIR thermal cameras and video analytics, Timeless Technologies, recently visited the site with FLIR’s David Montague and Paul Frewen to discuss the Waterfall application. Tinus Diedericks concludes: “We were privileged to work with our integrating partners 4C Technology on this magnificent new estate by Century Property Developments as well as to have shown off this stunning development to David Montague of FLIR Systems. Proper security infrastructure is the number one reason why South African residents invest in Security Lifestyle Estates and Century Property Developments together with 4C Technology just raised the bar with this installation.”
