Planning and strategy first

August 2014 Integrated Solutions

Video management systems, are they worth what they cost, do they simplify or complicate operations, are they utilised as they were intended? As technology progresses and moves beyond your typical VMS and starts integrating with various other platforms such as access control, building management systems etc., there are many products out there offering a bit more intelligence or features than the next.

One needs to go back and look at the operational requirements of a security solution and how technology can be utilised to reduce and manage risk most effectively. When approached correctly this reduces the amount of resources required in the long term reducing operational costs. The type of solutions should be implemented with strategy and a long term goal in mind.

With the latest buzzwords, like integration, PSIM, ASAP, GIS, command and control, artificial intelligence, video analytics, smart cities and so forth, there are many more things to consider than what camera and what VMS to use.

Studies have shown that surveillance systems are limited without added intelligence. Watching only two monitors, an operator misses 45% of the action after 10 minutes and after 22 minutes misses 95% of the action. This data is for a relatively empty scene: In a busy scene they see can see even less action and can virtually never detect a stationary or missing object. Intelligent software makes a surveillance system more than a recording device, it becomes an active tool for improving the quality and effectiveness of surveillance operations.
