Reliable video storage hard drives

Surveillance is a vital component of any modern security system, but using the wrong hard drive for CCTV video recording can have disastrous consequences. From skipped frames to missed recordings and even failed hard drives, having the wrong drive for the job means that when the time comes to review and playback footage, vital evidence may have been lost.

“Standard desktop hard drives are designed to operate in short intervals in a normal office environment for eight to 10 hours a day. When they are used in a demanding, always-on environment such as a CCTV application, they simply cannot cope. The constant running, high temperature fluctuations and equipment vibrations found in typical surveillance applications cause problems with recording and playback, and can even cause the drive to fail prematurely. WD Purple incorporates AllFrame technology for improved performance. AllFrame works with Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) streaming. This reduces frame loss, improves playback and increases the number of drive bays supported, reducing error pixilation and video interruptions for smooth, seamless video recording and playback. Reduced power consumption, critical in high-temperature applications, helps to keep the drives cool during constant operation. IntelliSeek technology calculates the ideal seek speeds, which lowers power consumption, noise and vibration that can damage and cause additional wear to drives. This helps to dramatically improve reliability in demanding environments. The drives are also built for compatibility with different chassis and chipset manufacturers to enable integration into both new and existing surveillance solutions.

“The convergence of security and traditional IT has resulted in many CCTV solutions today running off an Internet Protocol (IP) backbone. Available in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB and 4 TB, WD Purple can support up to eight drive bays and up to 32 high definition (HD) video surveillance cameras, delivering the flexibility to grow and expand security systems as future requirements change. The drives feature a three-year worldwide limited warranty.
