Securing estates through technology

May 2014 Access Control & Identity Management, Residential Estate (Industry)

Powell Tronics exhibited at the Cape Town Estate breakfast and CEO John Powell was pleased with the event. He says focused events like the Executive Breakfasts allow Powell Tronics to focus on a specific area of the market. Instead of trying to please everyone at a large event, the Executive Breakfast was focused on estates and this allowed Powell Tronics to tailor its presentation to the right people.

Powell says the biggest problem estates have to deal with is visitor or contractor management. Estates need to control who comes onto the premises and when, while gathering meaningful information on these entries and exits. Additionally, this all needs to be done without creating a bottleneck at estate gates or security booms between locations within estates.

The days of keeping records in a visitor’s book are over. The information is hard to access, if it’s accurate, and there is no way to know who sees the book or if in fact all the books are stored by the estate – they can disappear quite easily. Using automated access systems like driver’s licence readers and car registration readers allows estates to capture the correct information from visitors and to save this securely for later analysis or investigation.

Powell Tronics has also created a solution that captures where visitors are going within an estate via a drop down menu on the readers. Once the visitor has stated where they are going, a Bluetooth printer carried by the guard prints a PIN number which the visitor uses to enter the estate and to gain entry to other secured areas within the estate.

The information captured in this manner is stored electronically and securely, making it faster and easier for estate managers or police to find information immediately should an incident need investigation. It also prevents criminals from entering the premises with false credentials.
