IP solution to replace analogue

March 2014 Surveillance

When the security of your organisation is potentially at stake, the last thing you need is an antiquated video surveillance system. In today’s high-tech world, you need the ability to view, review and play back video from a central platform. More critically, you need a system that can ensure accurate identification of individuals.

Reckitt Benckiser South Africa is part of a multinational business focused on household, health and personal care products and as such, understood that when it comes to security, analogue systems need to be consigned to the history books. The company realised that the lack of scalability provided by its existing analogue CCTV systems meant they were no longer sustainable. Moreover, since they utilised multiple standalone systems, it was impossible to interface these with one another.

Fortunately, Bytes Systems Integration was on hand to supply the company with a best-of-breed solution that is based on the latest IP protocols. This, says Andre Ellis, consultant for CCTV and BMS Sales at Bytes, means the required scalability was delivered, while the BSI also ensured that every single IP camera was connected to a unified graphical user interface.

“The system Reckitt Benckiser was using posed numerous challenges, not the least of these being the many and varied standalone systems that used analogue cameras, coupled with a variety of DVRs that were all operating on their embedded software,” he says.

“To counter this, Bytes installed a new central control room with a high-definition (HD) video wall. This was further enhanced by control room software that includes a virtual video matrix and interactive graphical user interface.”

Ellis points out that the new megapixel HD cameras supplied by Bytes also improve security through the provision of wider fields of coverage and much stronger levels of detail. He adds that there are now 136 new megapixel HD cameras connected to field PoE switches with a CAT 5 network cable.

“Probably the most exciting application the new system offers to senior managers of the company is the fact that it enables these people to view at a glance the location and status of all the cameras.

“It also enables them to bring up live and recorded video by clicking on the camera icons, using any smart device, from anywhere in the world. This solution clearly takes security to an entirely new level for Reckitt Benckiser and is something we at Bytes are justifiably proud of,” concludes Ellis.
