Virtual barrier offers proactive protection

January 2014 Surveillance, Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection, Residential Estate (Industry)

Silverhurst Estate, one of the most sought-after residential addresses in South Africa, is situated in the rural, green valley of Constantia in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Nestled on the slopes of Table Mountain, Silverhurst is set amongst some of the country’s most famous wine estates and picturesque forest walks. With 76 spacious villas, historical mansions and beautiful family homes, the estate lies steeped in history, subtle sophistication and style.

For those who enjoy walking, The Silverhurst Trail passes along the northern perimeter of the estate, and hikes from Constantia Nek, along the towering slopes of Table Mountain, to the breathtaking Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, are just a short distance away.

In 2011 a total of 63 VideoIQ cameras were installed along the perimeter of Silverhurst Estate. The integration of the equipment was done by EOH and on-going off-site monitoring is managed by Verifier Off-Site monitoring services.

“Our experience of the system’s software to monitor the perimeter is that it is end-user friendly and the cameras are rugged. Since the installation of the Video IQ perimeter surveillance system at Silverhurst Estate we have been incident free. Our sincere thanks to Tinus and his staff at Timeless Technologies for their continued support,” said Tony Butcher, estate manager.

Tinus Diedericks from Timeless Technologies explains why the VideoIQ installation was fit for this application: “The customer needed best-of-breed technology, at the time. We embarked upon a detailed design where the virtual barrier accommodated and supported the physical barrier. The 80/20 principle of 80% detection on the outside and the 20% detection on the inside, prevails.

“This is more of a preventative measure than reactive surveillance measure. The true video analytics minimises the false alarm rate, especially during windy, stormy conditions. Added value by using this equipment is the fact that all 'decisions' are made at the camera and the edge recording minimises the use of an equipment room. All in all, this is a cost effective, but reliable solution and the cost of ownership over five years is very favourable, especially the cheap maintenance costs.”
