Rack-mounted server/workstation

November 2013 Infrastructure, Transport (Industry)

BVM Mobile, part of the BVM Group, has developed the VRS-100, a low power 1U 19-inch rack mounted server/workstation platform, designed primarily for use in emergency services’ vehicles as a mobile control room server or as a platform for a mobile first-responder incident centre.

Other potential uses include commercial vehicle control, monitoring and entertainment centres, in mapping, utility vehicles and other applications where a rugged and reliable mobile computing capability is required for communications, data management, command and control and similar activities. The vehicle-optimised 250 W PSU operates from 9-30 VDC. The VRS-100 draws less than 1,5 mA on standby, allowing it to be continuously powered-on. Controlled by the ignition switch or a main system switch the PSU provides intelligent shutdown, crank protection and battery deep discharge prevention, protecting the system from transients and voltage brownouts and the battery from premature damage.

The unit is based around an industrial grade motherboard, running third or fourth generation Intel Mobile i7/i5/i3 processors addressing up to 16 GB DDR3 SDRAM. Gigabit LAN, SATAII and III mass storage and up to two PCIe or miniPCIe expansion slots make the unit configurable and scalable, allowing a wide variety of additional functionality to be installed as required. An internal 2.5-inch HDD bay is fitted with either a SATA HDD or a SSD to user specification. The industrial grade rack mount aluminium enclosure is EMI shielded to protect the unit from external interference.
