Security environments are becoming more complex, but also more connected. Physical security, video surveillance, access control, building systems, and cyber protection are no longer operating in isolation. Instead, they are converging into integrated platforms that allow organisations to see risk more clearly, respond faster, and make better decisions.
This shift will be a central focus at Securex South Africa, taking place from
“IoT platform integration sits at the heart of this convergence. Sensors, cameras, access readers, alarms, and environmental monitors increasingly feed into unified platforms rather than standalone systems. When these devices share data, security teams gain broader situational awareness across sites and operations. A single incident, such as unauthorised access or abnormal movement, can trigger coordinated responses across multiple systems, reducing delays and dependence on manual intervention,” says Mark Anderson, portfolio director at Montgomery Group Africa.
Artificial intelligence adds another layer of value. AI-driven analytics processes large volumes of video and sensor data far more efficiently than human operators. These systems can identify unusual behaviour, detect objects left behind, flag perimeter breaches, or highlight patterns that indicate elevated risk. This shifts security teams away from constant screen monitoring towards exception-based management, where attention is focused only when action is required.
Operational benefits are where convergence delivers measurable results. Integrated security platforms can reduce response times, improve incident documentation, and support audit and compliance requirements. Analytics also help managers optimise staffing, adjust patrol routes, and reduce false alarms. Over time, the data generated by connected systems becomes a strategic resource, supporting better planning and more informed investment decisions.
Drones and cybersecurity
Drones are increasingly part of this integrated security landscape. Used for perimeter monitoring, rapid response, and situational assessment, drones extend visibility beyond fixed infrastructure. When connected to central security platforms, they provide live aerial intelligence that complements ground-based systems.
“Securex South Africa will again showcase drone technology that integrates directly with surveillance software, command centres, and analytics tools. We saw a huge uptake from drone suppliers at last year’s event, and the visitors positively received the additional exhibitors,” says Anderson.
Cybersecurity remains a critical consideration in converged environments. As more devices connect to networks, the potential attack surface expands. Protecting video streams, access systems, and IoT devices from unauthorised access is essential. Integrated security strategies now include network segmentation, encryption, access control, and continuous monitoring to ensure physical security systems do not introduce digital risk.
Privacy is also firmly in focus. AI analytics and expanded surveillance capabilities raise important questions around data protection and ethical use. Responsible deployment requires clear governance, transparency, and compliance with data protection legislation. Many solutions featured at Securex South Africa address this through privacy-by-design features such as anonymisation, role-based access, and configurable data retention.
“The security sector is moving rapidly towards integrated, intelligence-led environments,” says Anderson. “Organisations want systems that communicate with
each other, deliver meaningful insight, and support operational efficiency without compromising cybersecurity or privacy. Securex South Africa provides a practical platform where these technologies can be explored side by side.”
