ProtecLink 2025 spotlights industry tensions and transformation

Issue 4 and 5 2025 Security Services & Risk Management, News & Events

ProtecLink 2025, created and hosted by Ithegi Electronics, brought together key stakeholders from the security, finance, and innovation sectors under the theme "Connecting Security, Finance, and Innovation: Inspiring Transformation in the Industry." Delegates had the opportunity to engage with thought leaders, explore practical solutions, and connect with industry peers in an impactful and collaborative environment.

While the event delivered rich discussions, networking, and collaboration, it also shed light on the underlying tensions shaping the security industry—most notably the ongoing dynamics between TAPSOSA (The Association of Private Security Owners of South Africa) and NBCPSS (National Bargaining Council for the Private Security Sector).

The conference opened with a powerful keynote address from Jones Maphalaphathwa, president of TAPSOSA. His address aligned closely with the conference’s theme of transformation, but it did not shy away from tackling the difficult conversations facing the sector.

Maphalaphathwa emphasised that true transformation in the security industry requires strengthened regulation. He highlighted three critical points:

1. PSiRA must remain independent, empowered, and properly resourced to carry out its mandate effectively.

2. Consumers of private security services must also be held accountable for driving compliance and fair practices.

3. The sector must remain vigilant against practices that could undermine transparency and trust.

The most striking moment of his address was his direct call to the CEO of the Bargaining Council (NBCPSS) to refrain from involvement in tender processes, a move, he argued, that compromises the integrity of both the council and the industry it serves.

While tensions between TAPSOSA and NBCPSS have often been discussed behind closed doors, ProtecLink 2025 created a neutral platform for these issues to be openly addressed. By placing such conversations at the forefront, the conference underscored its commitment to encouraging transparency, dialogue, and accountability among all stakeholders.

Delegates were reminded that transformation in the industry cannot be achieved without addressing these systemic issues. The alignment between innovation, financial solutions, and regulatory clarity will remain crucial to advancing the industry.

Exhibitor showcase

Delegates had the chance to interact with innovative service providers and suppliers, including:

• Dräger SA & Pienaars Bro: high-quality uniforms for the security industry.

• Ithegi Electronics: advanced guard monitoring systems.

• Control Instruments: Trusted supplier of security products and technology.

• Outsurance: Tailored business insurance solutions.

As the host of ProtecLink 2025, Ithegi Electronics provided a natural platform that inspired conversations on transformation. Their role in enabling technology-driven dialogue reflected how innovation is not just about tools, but also about creating spaces where the industry can confront challenges and co-create solutions.

Sponsors and partners driving impact

The success of ProtecLink 2025 was made possible by the support of its sponsors and partners:

• FNB: presenting innovative financial solutions for the security sector.

• VW: showcasing reliable fleet solutions.

• PSiRA: reinforcing the importance of strong, independent regulation.

• NBCPSS and SEDFA (Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency): adding industry perspective and collaborative strength.

The conference’s media presence was amplified through SMART Security Solutions and Team Optics Media, who ensured that the day’s conversations were captured and shared across the industry. By facilitating open dialogue, supported by innovation and collaboration, the conference proved that transformation requires courage, transparency, and accountability.
