From the editor's desk: Showtime for Securex

Issue 3 2025 News & Events

Andrew Seldon, Editor

We have once again reached the time of year when the security industry focuses on Securex. This issue includes a short preview, with more coming online and via our special Securex Preview news briefs.

This year, we will have the usual show in Johannesburg, with the organisers looking to do another one later in the year in Cape Town. Given the growing industry in the Western Cape and some of the innovative products coming out of the region, it seems to be a worthwhile pursuit. Plus, the less fortunate like me will get to hang around in a city where they fill potholes and manage to keep traffic lights working. It’s like a trip to Europe without having to buy euros.

Once again, SMART Security Solutions will be hosting the Securex Seminar Theatre, and we have a few great topics on the agenda. We will cover various aspects of the industry, from guarding to video management platforms, and we wouldn’t get away with not doing a bit of AI. In fact, we have an AI presentation every day of the show, all of which promise to be interesting. If you were wondering what the impact of agentic AI, or AI agents, would be, you may find an answer in the seminar theatre.

If you ever wanted to know how to set up a legal drone programme quickly, despite all the red tape, or were contemplating whether on-premises, offsite, or a hybrid architecture is better for your surveillance needs, Tuesday will provide some answers. Wednesday will see presentations on ANPR and how security companies can monetise their intelligence, which seems pertinent in a time of data overload.

If you’re at the show on Thursday, Agentic AI will be a topic (again), as will a newly released AI agent designed for alarm monitoring companies. SASA will present on the state of the security industry, highlighting opportunities and some challenges that have sprung up recently.

Other highlights include the 2025 OSAP Awards. The winners will be announced at the seminar theatre on Wednesday, 4 June, at 15h00, and the SAIDSA Techman Awards will be handed out at the same time on Tuesday. The ever-popular K9 demonstration area and drone demonstration area will also be there again.

While Securex is where all the cool kids will be hanging out, we should not forget that there are co-located shows that are also worth a visit. Firexpo will be right next door, and we look forward to seeing some new exhibitors as well as some of the fire industry’s ‘ou manne’. The A-OSH EXPO and the Facilities Management Expo will surely attract attention, as you can’t separate them from the security industry – not legitimately, anyway.

While the organisers and exhibitors are dealing with the last-minute chaos of getting everything in place, hopefully, our print and online previews will help you decide where to go and what to do between June 3rd and 5th this year. You can find out more at www.securex.co.za. SMART Security Solutions has also published the show guide, which will be handed out at the event and which you can download at www.securitysa.com/ex/securex25.pdf
