SecurityHQ certified B-BBEE Level 1: Delivering global services from a local entity

Issue 1 2025 Information Security

SecurityHQ, a global managed security services provider (MSSP) with an office in South Africa, has announced it can now offer local companies a complete managed cybersecurity service from a Level-1 B-BBEE accredited and 51% black-owned service provider.

The local branch of SecutityHQ has representation in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with its Johannesburg office, including a security operations centre (SOC), hosted in a secure AWS instance in Cape Town. The SOC is one of six globally, with the others in London, New York, Brisbane, Dubai and Pune (India). This broad scope of operations ensures that customers have over 450 cybersecurity experts covering all cyber aspects, available around the clock to monitor and manage their cybersecurity, as well as alert companies of attacks and work with them to prevent, defend, and if necessary recover from attacks.

SecurityHQ operates on a zero-capex model, which means organisations have a predictable annual operational expense that delivers professional cybersecurity defence, reaction, advisory, and compliance services. The cost remains steady throughout the year, no matter how often a customer may be attacked – the goal is to provide a full cyber service to strengthen companies’ defences and prevent an attack altogether.

Continuously changing threat landscape

Rob Griggs, Regional Managing Director of SecurityHQ Southern Africa, explains that with constant cyberattacks, which are always changing and evolving (especially with the advent of AI), only the largest enterprises can afford to have an comprehensive cybersecurity

team employed. Despite this, many have also added cloud services, further complicating their cybersecurity defence needs. A cloud-based service provider like SecurityHQ provides the latest skills required to address any number of cyber threat tactics, with specialists constantly undergoing updated training to combat the latest threats.SecurityHQ’s services go beyond defence and include advisory services to assist clients in tightening their defences and notifying them of the latest emerging threats. It also contains a growing AWS security offering to protect millions of customers using the Amazon cloud platform.

As an MSSP, SecurityHQ has licences for the top cybersecurity products available globally. This means customers do not have to be concerned with purchasing the latest tools or continually updating them. Everything happens via the cloud service, however, Griggs notes that for companies that have already invested in cybersecurity software tools, SecurityHQ can incorporate them into its managed service – thereby providing only the skills needed for 24x7 operations – alleviating this expense to the customer.

Rand cost risks: recovery, ransomware, reputational and regulatory

Cybersecurity has become essential for everyone as data breaches can lead to significant financial losses. Research from IBM determined that the average cost of a single data breach case in South Africa exceeded R50 million in 2024.

In addition, a company’s reputational damage after an attack is made public, is hard to calculate. How does one measure people’s unwillingness to do business or even be associated with a particular brand? Then, there is the attention one can draw from regulators, leading to further compliance penalties. This includes the South African Information Regulator as well as European and American regulators, who mandate that companies ensure data security when dealing with citizens and businesses within their jurisdictions.

Although SecurityHQ provides the appropriate skills from across the world, Griggs points out that local customers pay in Rand, which avoids the uncertainty of currency fluctuations, whilst ensuring the same 24/7 service from the global base of expertise and experience.
