Fire safety in commercial kitchens

SMART Fire & Safety 2025 Products & Solutions, Fire & Safety, Commercial (Industry)

Fire safety in commercial kitchens is becoming increasingly critical. Defender is Europe’s first EN 17446:2021-approved kitchen hood fire suppression system and offers the indispensable safety measures required. Commercial kitchens in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, prisons and other food establishments are considered high-risk areas for fires for several reasons:

• Various high-temperature appliances are used, many of which operate with open flames or high temperatures. Electrical faults, short circuits, or gas leaks can lead to fires.

• Kitchens contain flammable materials such as oil, flour, and sugar. Oil vapours accumulating in the hood during cooking increases fire risk.

• Kitchens operate at high intensity and for long hours, which can lead to equipment overheating, staff inattentiveness, and maintenance neglect, increasing the likelihood of a small spark developing into a major fire.

• Kitchen hoods are meant to eliminate oil vapours and smoke. Nevertheless, built-up residues inside these systems can eventually ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Defender systems activate quickly to prevent the spread of fire and offer several advantages:

• Rapid detection and response: Quickly detects and extinguishes fires.

• Specialised suppression agents: Effective against grease fires.

• Automatic activation: Requires no human intervention.

• Continuous protection: Provides 24/7 security.

• Compliance with standards: Adheres to all fire safety standards.

• Life and property safety: Safeguard your business, employees, and customers.

• Business continuity: Ensures that businesses continue to operate smoothly during fire incidents.

• Reputation management: A fire incident can significantly damage a restaurant's reputation.

• Insurance benefits:/ Insurance companies increasingly require restaurants to have fire suppression systems.
