Physical security solution at the JSE

Issue 1 2022 Financial (Industry)

JSE Limited, situated in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, is the biggest stock exchange in Africa and is primarily dominated by large corporates and mining companies. The company was established in 1887 by the mining industry in order to raise funds and today business people and companies buy and sell stock through JSE.

Turnstar was recently contracted to provide the JSE with a comprehensive site- and client-specific solution, designed for maximum safety and security. The physical security portion of the project included 10 Speedgate Motion lanes, two Dynamic Drop Arm Barriers and a Pulse automatic special-needs gate.

The Speedgate Motion lanes were fitted with facial recognition readers and temperature monitoring cameras by a third party, to ensure enhanced access control. “The lanes, comprising a mixture of 900 mm (for wheelchair and baby buggy access) and 650 mm wide barriers, were manufactured in 304 grade brushed stainless steel. The stylish Speedgate Motion is a combination of functionality and aesthetics, providing ultra-high-speed access with seamlessly integrated motor drive technology,” says Craig Sacks, CEO of Turnstar.

“As with all Turnstar products, there is an emphasis on durability and reliability to provide solutions that offer longevity and minimised maintenance in a very cost-effective package. The Speedgate Motion’s intelligent algorithm has tamper-detection feedback and a built-in intelligent PLC controller. Together with its motion detection sensor array, which allows for dynamic following of the pedestrian through the lane, these features are enhanced with the ability to deter tailgating, unauthorised direction and crawling,” says Sacks.

The dedicated heavy-duty Pulse special-needs gate features a 180° opening to readily facilitate the passage of wheelchairs, trolleys and baby buggies. The Pulse automatically opens, leaving the pedestrian free to pass through the gate without any intervention required. Designed for intensive use, it incorporates a frameless 8 mm CNC toughened safety glass wing and a 170 mm diameter 304 grade brushed stainless steel post, driven by motor drive technology.

The two Dynamic Drop Arm Barriers feature an ultra-slim 304 grade brushed stainless steel cabinet design, incorporating Turnstar’s SwiftDrive technology, motor embedded Hall sensors and two optical sensors. In the event of power failure, the two 12 V 7 AH batteries provide backup to ensure that pedestrians can enter or leave without hindrance.
