Automatic tyre spike industrial vehicle barrier

Issue 8 2021 Access Control & Identity Management

The Turnstar Velocity Raptor automatic tyre spike industrial barrier, with SwiftDrive technology, is aimed at high-volume and high-security access applications such as parkades, shopping centres residential estates and airports.

The Velocity Raptor’s surface mount version is only 55 mm high and 345 mm wide, making it the lowest surface mount spike barrier with the narrowest width ramp on the South African market. This feature minimises the possibility of damage to the undercarriage of authorised vehicles and increases the comfort of the driver when passing through the barrier. In addition, the barrier is designed to withstand the load effects of a fully-laden 8-ton truck, overloaded three times. The recessed version allows for the roadway to remain smooth and to have only the patented double-sided spike protruding. The double-sided spike provides absolute protection for vehicles travelling in either direction through the lane, something a single-sided spike cannot guarantee.

Durability and reliability are prominent characteristics of the Velocity Raptor, with two separate motors driving the spikes and barrier arm. The SwiftDrive brushless DC motors, with planetary gearbox, provide high levels of efficiency and a high power-to-volume ratio. The brushless DC motors boast an extended life span, which equates to virtually limitless operation cycles.

The Velocity Raptor’s high-speed operation of between 2,8 and 4,7 seconds (dependent on the several different barrier arm lengths) allows fast throughput of traffic, thereby preventing bottlenecking. In addition, the barrier has a seamlessly integrated OPTIC LED light strip that provides maximum visibility, safety and aesthetics.

The barrier is designed for severe operating conditions and the two built-in 12 V 7 Ah batteries provide the reassurance of continued operation during load-shedding or unplanned power outages. The barrier can also operate with solar powered systems.

After approximately 1500 operations, the batteries will have been exhausted and the barrier has an effortless mechanical override for manual operation, permitting the release of the barrier arm and spike to allow traffic to pass through unhindered in the event of an emergency.
