Physical access security at Pretoria Zoo

Issue 7 2021 Access Control & Identity Management

The 85-hectare National Zoological Garden of South Africa (Pretoria Zoo) is the largest zoo in the country and the only one with national status. The zoo houses thousands of specimens and hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians.

More than 600 000 people visit the zoo annually, making superior physical access control a necessity. Turnstar recently manufactured and installed two Trident waist height double turnstiles and a special needs gate at the Pretoria Zoo.

The turnstiles, which were fitted by a third party, have a barcode scanner which reads a bracelet barcode issued on payment of a ticket. The turnstiles were manufactured from 304 grade brushed stainless steel and are supplied with a 10-year fit-and-forget guarantee.

The Trident turnstile is suited to high volume access and medium levels of security. The heavy-duty electromechanical rotation ROTALOK locking mechanism allows bi-directional operation and is proven to enhance the longevity of the turnstile. In addition, the ultra-quiet buffered solenoids and pawls, which are case hardened to eliminate any wear, add to the maintenance-free characteristics of the turnstile.

The Turnstar special needs gate provides controlled access and unassisted opening and closing for wheelchairs and baby buggies and in the event of power failure the glass wing can easily be manually moved.
