Light barriers that work together

January 2003 Sensors & Transducers Security Services & Risk Management

Peering through 10 pieces of white paper of standard thickness is no problem for Wenglor light barriers - which are well-suited to applications involving high levels of contamination, for example in the lumber industry. These sensors are capable of determining whether or not wooden boards on a conveyor belt are of identical length, or if one or more protrude over the edges of the pallet. They are also suitable for keeping an eye on grain silo filling levels.

Light barriers are connected to a central control unit, thus minimising the size of the transmitter and the receiver units. The LV 250 control unit is capable of monitoring three type EA 250/SA 250 light barriers. Twenty-seven individual light barriers can be used together by interconnecting nine control units with the help of a single strip connector. Versatile light barrier systems can be created that are easy to use. One of the control units is designated the master, and is used to manage all of the other control units, which may be implemented within widely varying environments. Quick and easy implementation of this technology is assured by logical operation, with a selector switch for the choice of functions and operating modes. The system is configured by means of a key and double-checking for correct set-up is a matter of glancing at the row of LEDs on the master device.

Each light barrier has its own output at the control unit, which allows for querying the switching status of each individual barrier. A group output (ie the logic output) can be used to monitor all of the light barriers simultaneously.
