Warm winds blow for universal user interface

March 2006 Data Acquisition & Telemetry Products & Solutions

Adroit Technologies has introduced a snazzy weather application which demonstrates the Smart Client capabilities of the Viznet Information Portal, that is drawing curious software aficionado's and systems integrators to the Viznet website.

www.viznet.co.za generates a live update of the weather, as it happens, at Adroit's head office on Witkoppen Road in Fourways, Johannesburg from anywhere in the world and demonstrates the capabilities of the Adroit Agent Server in collaboration with the Internet capabilities of the Viznet Information Portal.

Data on wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and rainfall is gathered using VantagePro instrumentation which wirelessly connects to a base station that in turn transfers the data to the Adroit Server located inside the head office. All records are time and date stamped in order to keep the weather history.

As a user opens a graphic form for the weather over the Internet, the Viznet Server that resides at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) fetches the required data from Adroit using a web service, giving a realtime view of what is happening here in sunny South Africa.

Viznet has three components: (1) a server, which provides enterprise services, (2) a designer, which is used across the Internet to design screens and link to data from various data sources, and (3) an operator, which is the smart client portion that resides on the Internet. Screens developed within the designer can interact with the operator. The Viznet operator, with some example screens, interacts with the weather station and can be downloaded from www.viznet.co.za/vip.

"The Viznet operator is a smart client that allows us to combine features from the thin and thick client environments to offer users the best of both worlds," says Fritz Kok, software engineer for Adroit Technologies.

Adroit's new weather station example, and also its operator component are globally accessible and demonstrate some of the capabilities of the Viznet Information Portal. The company has also localised the operator screens for international visitors who can view the information in their own language via the Viznet framework. "The weather station is a wonderful example of how you can use the mixed graphics and advanced logging to show the data and displays," says Kok.

Kok continues, "Although we cannot at this stage control the weather, it is extremely important for many companies to be able to monitor and record weather data in order that it can be assessed for its effect on the productivity of their business environment - and this is but one example of using the Viznet environment to interact with various datasources from anywhere in the world.

So if you want to see this new technology from Adroit in action or would simply like to see what the weather is in Gauteng, log on and try it out.
