Siemens acquires Flender

October 2005 News Integrated Solutions Financial (Industry)

In following its antitrust investigations that ended in July, the European Union Commission has approved the acquisition of Flender - a manufacturer of mechanical and electrical drives by Siemens. The Euro 1,2 billion deal that will also see Flender South Africa integrated into Siemens Southern Africa in March 2006, will allow Siemens to offer its customers integrated solutions and systems across the entire drives range from a single source.

Dan Moodley, Automation and Drives (A&D) divisional director at Siemens Southern Africa, says with integrated solutions and systems from a single source, Siemens will offer its customers a range of products covering the entire drive train. "Across all industries and regions, we want to gain market shares in the segment for drive technology, and with the integration of mechanical drive technology, expand our leading position as the world's main supplier for industrial automation," says Moodley.

He says by bundling the expertise of Flender as a leader in mechanical and electric drive technology and Siemens A&D as the global leader in automation, Siemens will enhance the benefits of its products and systems for its customers in the various industries.

"Flender's gears and other components are an ideal fit for our offer of industry products and our integrated automation solutions based on Totally Integrated Automation. The world market for industrial drive technology has a volume of approximately Euro 25 billion and a yearly growth rate of around 2,5%."
