Low loss audio and data switches for portable applications

Increased use of multimedia in modern smartphones has created a demand for high performance IC switches that propagate high quality audio voice and ring tones. It is no longer unusual to have integrated MP3, radio, PDA, and camera applications with a stereo audio output to the user. With each incremental improvement in technology comes higher user expectations.

In view of this, Analog Devices devised two switch families that are ideal for audio and data switching in these high end appliances. The ADG7xx family offers superior low RON (2,5 Ω) and RON flatness of (0,5 Ω) for most audio applications, and the ADG8xx family offers ultralow RON (0,5 Ω) and flatness (0,05 Ω) to meet very high performance requirements. The latest ADI performance breakthrough is the new ADG849, said to be the only plastic part of its size that can transmit 5 V audio (loud, polyphonic tones) without the clipping and distortion usually associated with such offerings.

A common audio switch application is speaker/headset selection. The low RON helps to maintain low losses in the device when transmitting audio. The low flatness also means the audio signal will experience minimum distortion, an essential requirement for multimedia devices supporting MPEG4, MP3, radio, and other high quality audio. In addition, the high current capability of the ADG8xx allows the transmission of even louder signals for smartphones.
