Mine expands two-way radio network

To extend plant and remote site communications at Geita Gold Mining (GGM) in Tanzania, Motorola authorised distributor, Danimex Communications, has implemented a new eight-channel repeater system which covers an area of 30 km. GGM relies heavily on two-way radio communication to co-ordinate activities between remote pits and the plant.

Due to the rapid expansion of operations, the mining company's conventional surface-based two-way radio system had to be upgraded to ensure workers in all pits could communicate with one another and that the depth of the pit would not impact on the quality of communication.

Following a site survey to determine the best solution, an eight channel repeater system that includes back-to-back repeaters for the Nyankanga and Kukuluma pits was recommended. The existing portable and mobile radio equipment on site was incorporated into the new system.

The installation of the system was completed in 10 days, despite encountering interference on the receiving channels due to the fact that GGM operates 19 frequencies within a 7 MHz span. To solve this problem, a band reject filter was custom-made. The Motorola portable and mobile two-way radios are designed to withstand dust, vibration, shock and extreme temperatures, while the X-Pand feature compresses audio to provide superior sound quality.
