Continent's largest supply chain conference

August 2004 News Integrated Solutions Infrastructure

As competition in all markets gets fierce, it is important for companies to benchmark their own efforts against international best practices as well as among their local peers. It is with this in mind that in this year's SAPICS conference we have lined up not only international speakers, but also a wealth of local speakers whom are all leaders in their fields.

Says Jan de Ruyter, managing director of SAPICS: "This year's event which is scheduled to kick off in Cape Town at the world renowned Cape Town International Convention Centre promises a tighter agenda, more comprehensive workshops and, as mentioned previously, a list of outstanding local and international speakers."

Speakers at the event will deliver papers on best practice supply chain practice, case studies, theories versus realities, all while debunking the myths of the acronym riddled world of technology, traditionally the driver of this specialised market. Top international speaker will be Barry Gibbons on the turn-around strategy at Burger King. This address will be entertaining as well as educational.

Local speakers taking centre stage include:

Sten Jessen - The Academy for Leadership Development; John McCleland - ADR International; Anton Grutter - University of the Western Cape; Anton Swanepoel - PSG Konsult; Brett Bowes - TerraNova; Carl Loubser, Competitive Capabilities International; Chantal van Schalkwyk - Tech-Pro Personnel; Colin Seftel - Petrel Engineering; Dawid Janse van Rensburg - Cargo Carriers; Gary Benatar - Industrial Solutions; Guy Harris - Competitive Capabilities International; Heinrich Strauss - e-Logics; Illona Wilken - Sage; Jack Brun - Bell Equipment; Joseph Grobler - Comparex Africa; Julian Curtiss - Curtiss Associates International; Koot Pieterse - PE Technikon; Martin Bailey - Industrial Logistic Systems; Clayton Thomas - Industrial Logistic Systems; Nico Taljaard - Barloworld Logistics; Norman Faull - Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town; Peter Swanepoel - Spoornet; Raj Siriram - Siemens; Roney Ndala - South African Quality Institute; Theo Sibiya - Gemini Consulting; Dr Tomasz Jekot - Super Group Supply Chain Management Consulting; and Willie Pretorius - Volition Consulting Services.

"Our speakers come from a variety of walks of life, some are CEOs of major companies, others general managers, supply chain managers and directors, while others are lecturers, consultants, and even authors. But all are well versed and knowledgeable in the world of managing the supply chain.

"Tasked to deliver content around this year's theme 'Imagineering', they will be covering a host of topics and material, all of which has been reviewed by the Society of Supply Chain Management, and all of which has been deemed highly credible, very informative and in some cases even revolutionary for the field. All of these elements promise to deliver an event unrivalled by any of the events previously held in this field," states de Ruyter.

A few of the topics included in the agenda are: Deconstructing price to build substantial profit; The truth about shop floor teamwork; Practices made perfect; Lack of process conformance - the soft underbelly of supply chain integration; A case study on the merger of Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery and Distillers; Supplier development, a case study; Linking projects to strategic corporate objectives; Theory vs practice; Technology and business connectivity; and multinational- vs local corporate - vs entrepreneurial supply chains - The hitchhikers guide to the inherent differences.

"All we can say is buckle your seat belts you are in for a ride, this year's conference has more to offer the African continent than ever before. And it is not too late to register, visit www.sapics.org.za to book your seat at this year's conference," concludes de Ruyter.
