Flow Measurement & Control

Concrete facts strengthen case for flowmeter

April 2004 Flow Measurement & Control Surveillance

Electromagnetic flowmeters from Krohne are fast becoming the first choice among readymix concrete producers for measuring the flow of abrasive semi-slurried wastewater used in the production process.

Control instrumentation specialist, Norstrom Group, an experienced supplier of plant control systems and calibration services to major readymix concrete and mortar suppliers, has reported a substantial increase in demand for Krohne's Ecoflux meter. Over the past 10 years Norstom divisional manager, Chris Shawcroft, has seen Ecoflux emerge as the most cost effective flowmeter on the market for this application in terms of low 'whole life' costs, due to its robust construction, abrasive resistance and minimal maintenance.

Ecoflux is used to measure the flow of recycled water in the concrete-making process. The water is used on the plant for various processes, and then drained into settlement pits for re-use. Water recycling plays an important part in minimising the plant's operating costs.

Shawcroft explains, "Conditions on site are obviously dusty and dirty, and this type of environment can have an adverse effect on equipment. The turbine meters previously used were more suited to fresh rather than recycled water and were prone to clogging when used to meter recycled water. Over the years we have supplied various brands of magnetic flowmeters but have found the Ecoflux to be the most successful."

According to Shawcroft, the Ecoflux meter is ideally suited to the harsh environment found on concrete plants. He explains, "It is virtually bulletproof. On site, if there is something that can be broken it will be broken. With Ecoflux there are no external or internal parts to damage."

Krohne's Ecoflux 1000 electromagnetic flowmeter has no moving parts to break down or deteriorate and is virtually maintenance free, thereby ensuring outstanding 'whole life' costs. The meter is non-invasive and does not suffer from any pressure drop, therefore delivering improved efficiency. It is also compact and easy to install, as well as providing excellent abrasion resistance.
