Reducing costs in Fieldbus I/O

March 2004 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking Access Control & Identity Management

As Fieldbus continues to grow throughout the processing and manufacturing industries, companies are continuously seeking for a more reliable and cost-effective solution for their installations. The new easy to connect system, 'e2c', can reduce the total cost of Fieldbus I/O up to 40%.

With e2c it is the user who decides which digital or analog I/O signals connect to which bus system. e2c supports the Interbus, DeviceNet and Profibus systems. This central distribution system - suitable for bus use - is fitted on-site and not somewhere in an external switchgear cabinet. The system is easy to install and configure, it uses a modular design and has universal diagnosis management.

The e2c system is independent of a bus. The wiring of the I/Os in a plant can be made with Profibus DP. Users will be able to wire the plant with the same I/O configuration with another bus system (eg, DeviceNet). Changing a bus only entails replacing the e2c's bus head and plug box. Because of the high concentration of I/Os in the individual mould nests, the e2c system - which can be modularly expanded - is superior to the use of distributed I/O modules. The e2c is a plug-and-play system as it eliminates the amount of preparation, such as stripping of wires - required for installing conventional I/O systems. The standard M12 connector was selected for the sensors/actuators in order to ensure short machine stoppage times during servicing. The system has a high level of EMC resistance enabling the user to install the e2c directly into an electromagnetic environment. The e2c has a rating of IP67.
