A family of 8-bit Flash PICmicro microcontrollers with new advanced motor control peripherals is available from Microchip. The 40-pin PIC18F4331/4431 and 28-pin PIC18F2331/2431 micros provide a complete solution for precise and efficient operation in many power control and motor control applications. The family's control capability is provided by three specifically designed modules. They are: power control featuring three-phase PWM capability; motion feedback including a quadrature encoder interface; and a high-speed A-to-D, operating at up to 200 kSa/s that can be synchronised with the PWM. Their PWM capability can include up to eight PWM channels with 14-bit resolution, centre alignment, programmable dead-time and two external fault-protection inputs. The devices (10 MIPS performance at 40 MHz) also feature an internal oscillator with selectable frequencies from 31,25 kHz to 8 MHz; four general-purpose timers; a clock monitor for fail-safe operation and an enhanced USART.
