RF log detector delivers high dynamic range and precision over temperature

25 February 2004 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT Access Control & Identity Management

Claimed to be the industry's first RF log amplifier to fully cover the 0,1 to 2,5 GHz band with exceptional dynamic range and ±1dB precision over temperature, Maxim's MAX2015 device can be configured as a simple RF power detector or as a complete closed-loop controller.

The combination of precision and dynamic range makes this log amplifier particularly useful in a variety of base station and other wireless applications including automatic gain control (AGC), transmitter power measurements, and received-signal-strength indication (RSSI) circuitry.

While maintaining ±3 dB log conformance at 25°C, the MAX2015 provides dynamic ranges of 75, 65, and 45 dB for 900, 1900 and 2500 MHz, respectively. The key to the device's success is, however, its superior precision over temperature and supply, according to the manufacturer. At 900 MHz, this device delivers 55 dB of dynamic range with ±1 dB of precision over the -40 to +85°C temperature range. Measurements at 1900 and 2500 MHz are equally impressive with dynamic ranges of 46 and 38 dB, respectively, under the same precision and temperature constraints. Offering ±0,25 dB precision over Vcc ±15%, it is also virtually unaffected by voltage-supply variations. These precision levels significantly enhance the accuracy of an RF power measurement.
