Island resorts sign up on high-speed Internet access

August 2003 Data Acquisition & Telemetry News & Events Security Services & Risk Management

Guests on Treasure Island Resort in the Mamamuca group now have high-speed Internet access, thanks to Telecom Fiji and 4RF Communications. The resort, which occupies the entire island, is using 4RF's Aprisa digital radio technology to link the island with Viti Levu for voice and data communications.

Telecom Fiji signed a distribution agreement for advanced performance microwave radios with 4RF and Treasure Island was the first field trial to prove the technology. Following the successful installation and testing of the technology, it has been accepted by Telecom Fiji and the link purchased.

Treasure Island Resort previously had limited Internet access via a dial-up modem, but the system was often unreliable and staff experienced frustrating delays re-establishing lost connections and uploading data. The resort maintains its own network server on the island, providing point-of-sale customer support for billing accommodation, meals, drinks and recreational activities. The server (on Treasure Island) is connected via the radio link to the resort's mainland office in Lautoka in what is termed a virtual local area network (VLAN), where the reservations and bookings are processed.

The Treasure Island link, which delivers Internet access at speeds of 128 or 256 kilobits per second, together with 10 to 15 voice circuits, is helping co-ordinate booking reservations and the logistics management of food and provisions, staff and services.

The new 4RF technology is more robust and reliable in terms of connectivity to the Internet with minimum dropouts since it is unaffected by most weather and atmospheric conditions. It provides for high-speed Internet/data and e-mail connection, high quality telephone and fax services, and is able to provide services over long distances on line of sight from Telecom Fiji stations. This service is 'always-on and available' with a dedicated IP connection with the billing based only on volume of traffic and not the time connected. Eight other resorts have had high-speed Internet access installed through the 4RF-radio technology.

4RF Communications engineers high-performance point-to-point microwave radio systems. The wireless technologies optimise the limited and finite frequency resource to deliver more data in less bandwidth. Network operators use its digital radios to transport voice, data and Internet traffic more effectively and at lower price points. Spescom MeasureGraph represents the 4RF Communications range of wireless communication products locally.
