Sasol wastewater plant calls on instrumentation specialist

Significant cost implications, coupled with environmental concerns, have led to the construction of the biggest wastewater treatment plant of its type in the world at Sasol Synfuels. Instrumentation specialist Endress+Hauser was awarded the contract to supply flow, pressure, temperature and level instrumentation to the plant.
In fact, Endress+Hauser supplied full instrumentation to the plant, except for analysers. With a total instrumentation value of R1,8 million, the total solution supplied by Endress+Hauser also included training modules and supply of spare parts - Sasol has an established in-house maintenance department that will undertake the maintenance of the wastewater plant.
The largest part of the instrumentation order, completed at the end of April 2002, consisted of 54 magnetic flowmeters, ranging in size from 3-14". Although a new plant, the decision was made to utilise the maturing capacitance probe technology over ultrasonic variants.
The reason that capacitance probes were selected is due to non-conductive foam forming in the gathering tanks, which would cause a problem for ultrasonic level measurement. By delivering this requirement, Endress+Hauser demonstrates its flexibility in meeting clients' needs.
The Sasol wastewater plant utilises the patented Weir Envig filtration technology to convert plant effluent into water fit for re-use in the plant. Several different membrane packages have been developed over the past 30 years, according to application and economic consideration. In this project, tubular reverse osmosis (TRO) proved to be the most effective means of filtration, considering the relatively high levels of insoluble materials - TRO has been found to remove up to 98% of dissolved materials and almost 100% of colloidal and suspended solids.
The picture shows some of the process instrumentation that was supplied by Endress+Hauser to Sasol Synfuels for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant.
