Suhner Fiberoptic's newest-generation small form factor (SFF) connector has been designed for high packing densities and combines high performance with advantageous additional features. Suhner Fiberoptic is now producing the LC connector according to Huber+Suhner's high manufacturing standards to offer customers better value.
"Today's patch panels with high packing densities not only require a compact design of the individual components, but also consistently high optical transmission performance," says Igor Marjetic, Suhner Fiberoptic. "The LC connector is based on 1,25 mm ferrule technology and has set a new global standard in its original version. It combines the advantage of a high packing density with ease of handling and short installation times."
However, this was not enough to satisfy the Suhner Fiberoptic team.
"In-house production of the LC allows a controlled high quality and markedly better transmission performance to be achieved, thanks to self-developed improvements, continues Marjetic. "Production in the in-house assembly shop has been systematically oriented towards achieving a high, reproducible Huber+Suhner cable assembly quality for SFF connectors. Along with the new LC, function modules have been defined which will also be applied in future SSF connectors developed by Huber+Suhner. This allows the connectors to be assembled using standardised tools and processes. These unified processes reduce error sources and ensure high quality throughout the SFF product line."
The new all-ceramic rugged ferrule ensures high performance stability in all environmental situations, says the company. Like the LX.5, the LC complies with the requirements of all Suhner Fiberoptic Assembly Classes. Thus, the insertion loss of an APC Premium is 0,09 dB typ. at max. 0,3 dB each-to-each, and the return loss is >85 dB.
The LC has been optimised not only in terms of manufacture. Additional features offer customers selective added value. The connector is equipped with an eight-fold adjustment feature allowing greater precision in positioning the fibre cores with given manufacturing tolerances. The assembly process has also been improved: For example, no shrink sleeve is used anymore. The cable jacket is fastened directly to the crimp sleeve so that the need for heat-shrinking is eliminated. This allows valuable time to be saved during assembly, especially when working in the field.
Some key performance features are: colour coding of the connectors, exchangeable; assembly of 0,6/0,9 mm tubes (tube variant); assembly of 1,7 to 2,4 mm cables (cable variant); singlemode PC, UPC and APC or multimode; snap-in closure element for safe and easy handling.
