1 February 2003

Two manufacturers walked away with awards for their use of design technology in promoting innovation, design excellence and competitive advantage - for themselves and South Africa - at the Technology Excellence Awards in Midrand, outside Johannesburg.

The winners of the Autodesk awards are ABB South Africa, which provides power and automation technologies, and Bell Equipment Company South Africa, manufacturer of hauling and loading equipment.
ABB South Africa received the award for its outstanding use of computer-aided design (CAD) technology to quickly design complex mechanical/electrical interfaces in electric motors, reducing delivery times and increasing export orders.

Bell Equipment was recognised for its sophisticated use of advanced CAD technology to optimise the function, value and appearance of its new earthmoving equipment products and to continuously pursue product improvements.
Congratulating the Autodesk award winners on their success, managing director of Autodesk (Africa), Errol Ashwell, said that in addition to eliminating the need for the creation of physical prototypes, the winners had dramatically reduced errors and reworks.
Award sponsor for the third consecutive year, Autodesk traditionally presents an award for the most effective use of design technology in the manufacturing sector and another in the built environment category. A lack of suitable candidates among entrants in the built environment category saw two awards being made in the manufacturing sector.
