Securex Preview 2023

16 Issue 4 2023 www.securitysa.com What to expect from Securex, Fireexpo and the other concurrent events at Securex South Africa 2023, including the launch of Smart Security Solutions. Once again we find ourselves heading to this year’s Securex event. This year is rather special to Hi-Tech Security Solutions as we are rebranding, after many years, and will now be known as Smart Security. The reasoning behind this is highlighted in the preview section. It’s not going to surprise anyone that security in South Africa and Africa in general is more important than ever, but at the same time the circumstances and the situations we find ourselves in, especially in South Africa, are a perfect storm of criminality and incompetence from the so-called authorities that work to put businesses and people perfectly in the centre of criminals’ sites. At the same time, the same state of affairs means we are alone in the struggle and need security more than ever, while the economy is hamstrung, and budgets are tighter than ever. From the organiser’s office No compromises or shortcuts are acceptable when it comes to properly securing human and material assets. But the journey to choosing the appropriate technology can be simplified by a visit to Securex South Africa. With a 30-year history of matchmaking security products and services providers with organisations eager to find workable solutions, Securex South Africa comes to the fore. Held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, from 6 to 8 June 2023, Securex South Africa is the largest source of security offerings on the continent. A visit to Securex South Africa not only guides industry professionals to the optimal product or service for their specific requirements, but also provides them with an opportunity to find out more about current trends and legislation at the free-to-attend Securex Seminar Theatre. Eighteen seminar topics, presented by knowledgeable security specialists, share subject matter that range from physical security, through identity and access control and risk management, to identifying and tackling pervasive cybersecurity threats. Visitors can further maximise their time at the Expo by visiting the co-located A-OSH EXPO, Facilities Management Expo, and the recently launched Firexpo. Firexpo 2023 Firexpo 2023 not only provides visitors with access to a large range of fire detection and management technology and services, but furthermore equips them to make optimal decisions about solution and service provider selection. According to an article in SecurityLinkIndia (www.securitysa.com/*SLI1), fire detection equipment is generally expected to last 10 years FIA guidance on the life expectancy of a fire detection and alarm system issue (www.securitysa.com/*fia1). “However, the same equipment will often remain in place for up to 25 years. In a national survey carried out with healthcare fire officers, 50% of respondents described their system as between 10-20 years old, with a further 13% saying it was over 20 years old. Old systems tend to be difficult to manage due to reduced system reliability. Varied faults can cause false alarms and unnecessary disruption to hospital operation, and this can result in fines. The biggest issues come when the system cannot be maintained any longer due to component obsolescence or due to becoming unsupported by the manufacturer.” “This is one issue, amongst many, that continues to challenge risk managers, building/facilities managers, and OSH professionals. However, by attending Firexpo, visitors can discuss these issues with the many fire detection specialists exhibiting at the Expo. Live demonstrations and in-depth solution-finding are the order of the day at Firexpo, allowing visitors to leave the Expo equipped with a better understanding of what will work for their specific needs,” says Mark Anderson, Portfolio Director at Specialised Exhibitions – a division of Montgomery Group. Securex preview With the formalities out the way, the following is a selection of the companies visitors will find at the event, with a brief description of what to expect from them, as well as their stand numbers (which was correct at the time of writing (check the Visitor Guide for the latest information). More companies will be listed on www.securitysa.com and in the Securex news briefs. Stop by the Smart Security Solutions stand at Securex and discover the new rebranded Hi-Tech Security Solutions. Given the realities in the market we face today, effective security is no longer a silo run by one person who makes all the decisions. If you want your security to be effective, it must be holistic, covering cyber and physical security, risk management, facilities management (even if your facility is your house and even if it is in a complex/estate), and and also touches on health and safety (H&S). Consider your perimeter. That used to be a 100% physical security operation, but today even the perimeter is connected, often to a remote SMART SECURITY SOLUTIONS control room, and the alerts can identify where the perimeter is under attack. With AI integrated into the perimeter solution, false alarms of branches or the cat jumping over the fence can automatically be ignored without reducing your security – which brings cybersecurity into the perimeter equation. Moreover, if your perimeter is not designed properly (or ‘reasonably’), and someone enters and hurts themselves, you could be liable under H&S regulations. Security therefore, is no longer about products, but efficacy, protecting you physically and digitally by means of integrated solutions that incorporate all of the above. Smart Security will continue to serve the security market as always, but we are expanding our scope to include all the aspects of what constitutes a complete and efficient solution. While technology, in terms of products, still make up the solutions, the value (what people buy) is in the solution and what it accomplishes; the megapixels or speed of authentication etc. are only part of the greater value – or return on investment – to the facility/ home/estate/campus owner.
