Surveillance in transport

1 May 2018 Surveillance, Transport (Industry)

Where would we be without transport? Whether it is by road, rail, sea or air – transport plays a massive role in our modern society. In the fourth quarter of 2017, the GDP from transport in South Africa reached an all-time high of over R270 million.

According to an article on BizConnect, “South Africa is home to the farthest-reaching and highest-quality transport network on the African continent. For decades, the country’s extensive road, air, rail and sea links have underpinned economic and social development, not only in the domestic market but through the region as a whole.” However, it’s not all good news, as the transport industry is facing major challenges including failing infrastructure, theft and outdated technology.

With millions of rands being lost through stolen shipping containers, hijacked trucks or inefficient driving, proper surveillance makes a huge difference to any transport company. So, what does the transport industry need regarding surveillance?

• Connectivity – To get so much more out of all our connected devices and the data they provide

• Artificial intelligence – To make smarter and safer real-time decisions

• Interaction – To respond quicker and avoid problems.
