Technology to secure transport hubs

September 2017 Transport (Industry), Products & Solutions

Ensuring security of the movement of people and goods across the globe is vital to the infrastructures of world economies. With the growth of technology and the ability to conduct business globally, the world has become a much smaller place. The relative security that people and organisations may have felt in the past must be reviewed as new threats surface from previously unknown sources.

Security managers responsible for reducing risks in target environments must develop a comprehensive understanding of the nature of such environments. Organisations must consider their security relative to the environments they operate in. There are technologies contributing to the growth of the airport, rail, road and marine port security markets such as network access control and security, surveillance systems, tracking, screening and scanning systems. Understanding the threat these operations face is vital to ensuring that they are managed correctly.

Airports face increasing security issues and threats both land and air side and need the right solution to reducing such risks. Combinations of solutions are ideal for the different security objectives that busy inter-national transport hubs face. Some companies in the market offer physical security solutions that can be incorporated into a holistic security strategy that enables the busy environment of an airport to operate seamlessly, while still providing a high level of protection against some physical hostile attacks. These include a wide variety of access control and tracking solutions available to the market at cost effective pricing.

Ports face a complex security challenge both on land and sea to protect the vital transportation of the world’s commodities. The border and land access points require security solutions that enable authorised traffic to enter load or off load efficiently, while maintaining a secure environment. Illegal traffic, theft and terrorism, are some of the security challenges port operators should mitigate risk against.

Solutions that deal specifically with mitigating such risks include long-range UHF scanning and tracking devices which can be used for access control, asset tracking and people tracking that can help to control vehicle access and protect against terrorism.

The optimal way to protect goods and assets like trucks and trailers in transit and manage the routes they take for optimal productivity and lowest cost all depends on what solution best fits the needs of a company and these solutions can be easily created using a variety of security systems that give optimal functions.

For protection or control over assets fitted, transported or moved by truck or any other form of vehicle, long-range UHF devices can be used to scan in and log these types of assets or vehicles in a comprehensive fleet solution. Such a solution can be created to minimise the chance of assets on or in a vehicle to get removed or stolen without the owner or manager realising it. During the process of the solution being in effect, the long-range UHF would scan each asset on the vehicle, whether tyres, door lock tags, windows tags, etc. and save it in a profile form on a database linked to the system.
