City Lodge revamps security

August 2015 Access Control & Identity Management

City Lodge Hotel Waterfall City, part of the City Lodge Hotel Group, recently underwent a major security upgrade in a bid to provide guests with complete peace of mind when staying in one of the hotel’s 149 rooms. The requirement was for a security system not only befitting the ambience of the hotel, but also rich in functionality and highly reliable so as to minimise downtime and ensure a secure environment at all times.

Centurion Systems’ range of access automation products fit the bill perfectly, and the services of Johannesburg-based security firm Bsuresec were engaged to install the security infrastructure, which includes Centurion sliding gate motors, traffic barriers and GSM-based intercom systems allowing for wireless communication.

According to Bsuresec’s Keith Botha, the hotel was looking to achieve basic control and flow of visitors and staff members in and out of the premises. He went on to provide the following detailed breakdown of the newly-implemented security infrastructure.

“We installed a Centurion Sector 3m traffic barrier for controlled exit; they opted for this barrier to be operated by the security guard. There were already two single Vector linear swing gate motors installed to operate the entrance and exit gates.

“For entry, we installed a Centurion G-Speak Classic+ intercom system for communication to the reception desk. The pedestrian gate is controlled using a GateLox electric gate lock via a pushbutton inside the guard room. A basic POLOphone one-to-one intercom system was used for communication between the pedestrian gate and guard room.”

An Onity access card system, two Centurion D10 industrial sliding gate motors with Flux SA loop detectors fitted for free-exit, and an additional two G-Speak intercoms completed the security upgrade.

With regards to challenges, Botha highlighted the fact that, as with most construction sites where reticulation is supplied by the onsite electrician, drawing cable feeds through to the specified points does pose certain challenges. “The main entrance was particularly challenging. Minor surface run, galvanised conduits needed to be run by us to allow for completion.”

The Bsuresec team was first introduced to the project by Centurion’s Jaclyn Baiocchi, who proceeded to manage the entire project from beginning to end.

“Through the relationship I have built with Bsuresec and the City Lodge Hotel Group, I am now working on the parking system for the new City Lodge Hotel Newtown,” says Baiocchi.
