The safe movement of goods is critical for business

July 2015 Conferences & Events

G4S secures all aspects of the supply chain across diverse industry sectors around the world. The company is called upon to protect and account for its clients’ assets in many countries, through which it has developed a number of proven processes for protecting goods in warehouses and in transit.

G4S South Africa’s commercial director, Danie Schoeman, attended the logistics breakfast and delivered a short presentation highlighting the company’s capabilities in this market segment. G4S starts its client interaction by conducting an audit of the customer’s warehousing premises as well as the processes it currently has in place to manage the logistics of the operation. The audit will highlight any areas of risk within the business and G4S is able to propose solutions to ensure these risks are addressed.

Schoeman explained that G4S is not only a guarding company, but that it has proven, integrated solutions to secure warehousing and logistics operations. The solutions, which will spring from the risk audit, can comprise a number of components, incorporating risk management best practices, manned guarding, technology and cash handling systems.

There are also several solutions available to secure cargo as it is moved from one location to another. G4S also has the capacity to secure cargo security for a variety of industries, even providing fixed wing and helicopter transportation services via their Aviation Charter business as required.

Schoeman highlighted the current crime statistics as they apply to businesses in South Africa. Business robberies were up 13.7% during the last 2013/2014 measurement period as compared to the previous year – a statistic which logistics operations will find disturbing, although commercial crime was down by a similar amount.

He also noted that South Africa is one of the few countries where FreightWatch International rates the risk to cargo in transit as 'severe'. It shares this classification with only Brazil and Mexico in FreightWatch’s global cargo theft risk assessment.

The message G4S conveyed in the presentation is that the company provides an intelligent, integrated solution to achieve the best results for customers.
