February will see the ASIS International, Chapter 203 annual conference taking place in Cape Town from 4 to 6 February 2015. Titled Africa: A New Dawn – Opportunities and Challenges, this is an international security conference focusing on strategies for securing assets in Africa for the next 10-15 years. It features an array of renowned international guest speakers as well as interactive sessions, panel discussions, round tables, table-top exercises (all under Chatham House rules) with real-life experiences and solutions to deal with the many opportunities and challenges of doing business in Africa, a very dynamic and fluid continent.
Two of the speakers in this year’s conference are Nils Flaatten and Dr Marc Siegel.
Nils Flaatten completed his high schooling at Paul Roos Gymnasium, in Stellenbosch. He then spent a year as a Rotary Exchange Student in Spooner Wisconsin (USA) where he attended Spooner High School. He served in the South African Navy as a Combat Officer. He obtained a Bachelor of Art degree from the Stellenbosch University.
After university he worked in London for Dresdner RCM Global Investors and then Barclays Global Investors in Jersey (Channel Islands). He then moved to Hong Kong where he worked for Citigroup as the Asia-Pacific Regional Marketing Manager in the bank’s Global Corporate and Investment Bank division. While in Hong Kong he also served as the Chairperson of the South African Business Forum.
In South Africa he served as advisor to the provincial Minister for Development, Economics and Planning and Managing Director of the African Carbon Trust. He is currently the CEO of Wesgro - the official Tourism, Trade & Investment Promotion Agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape.
In addition Flaatten is Chairperson of the Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone LiCo. LiCo is a wholly-owned Wesgro subsidiary and is defined as a public entity by the Public Finance Management Act 1 of 1999.
Dr Marc Siegel is the Commissioner heading the ASIS International Global Standards Initiative developing international and national risk management, resilience, security, and supply chain standards as well as providing training on their implementation.
He is an internationally recognised Certified Business Improvement Lead Auditor, as well as a Certified Trainer and Skills Assessor for both security and resilience management.
As an Adjunct Professor in the College of Business Administration and the Master’s Program in Homeland Security at San Diego State University, Siegel pioneered the concept of applying a systems approach to security and resilience management for organisations and their supply chains. He chaired the technical committees and working groups for the series of ANSI standards developed for private security service providers to demonstrate accountability to business and risk management requirements while meeting legal obligations and respecting human rights.
Siegel serves as Chairman of ISO/PC284 developing standards for private security service providers. He is co-author of Organizational Resilience: Managing Risks of Disruptive Events – A Practitioner’s Guide, by James Leflar and Marc Siegel, CRC Press, 2013.
