Wireless broadband secures 175 km

September 2014 Surveillance

South Africa and China are both considered emerging markets and the challenges experienced in one country can often be mirrored in the other. This is particularly true when it comes to wireless solutions needed to fulfil the demand for services in urban, rural or tough-to-reach areas. Wireless services then become critical for connectivity, especially when it comes to last mile and backhaul services, and in mission-critical safe city projects.

Radwin has, together with BNC Technologies, covered 175 km of the Yangtze River in the northern Anhui province of China using wireless connectivity. This network allows the River Police to monitor the safety and security along the river, including the river traffic and its banks.

Bodies of water, particularly those with currents, can wreak havoc with RF signals. “Radwin’s technology allows for connectivity over water, has long range coverage per base station and additionally enables operation in the non line-of-sight environment,” says Nick Ehrke, sales director Radwin, adding that it also becomes the most practical solution for this type of undertaking. “This wireless offering means extended network reach. It’s robust, long-range and more impervious to challenging topographies.”

With water traffic supervision as one of the top priorities for the river police, this particular wireless solution needed to guarantee continuous broadband connectivity to high capacity mobile units (like patrol boats) from the operations centre, while ensuring seamless handover at speed. The Radwin solution allows for this as it has a high capacity – up to 250 Mbps per base station and either a 50 Mbps or 100 Mbps mobile unit. This means that the police department gets HD video transmission in real time from the patrol boats guaranteeing a rapid response no matter what the situation. The system’s long range coverage, the capacity and simple installation, means the Radwin FiberinMotion solution provides for cost effective deployment.

“While each country has distinct needs, wireless is a solution which rises to each challenge. With some 18 offices around the globe,” says Ehrke, “Radwin’s experience in a variety of markets and conditions means the company can offer both efficiency and trusted equipment throughout the southern African region.”

There are many factors to consider when looking at mobile security applications and operations, from the logistics through to the technical requirements. Radwin is able to offer the technological and logistical solutions which support both fixed and mobile options. Deployment is always smart, flexible and reliable which makes for a successful project, ensuring operations continue without any downtime. Some of these projects currently include public safety agency connectivity, multi-site, video surveillance, traffic management, land mobile radio backhaul and border control. All Radwin-based networks are easily managed via a common network management platform that is simple to configure and operate from a central location.
